Alma Dental Practice is committed to providing a programme for children to encourage and maintain healthy teeth and gums for life. This involves the child attending our Healthy Smile sessions and if necessary, the application of Fluoride Varnish.
Healthy Smiles Programme
One of our nurses Karen or Deborah will discuss and demonstrate different techniques on how to improve oral hygiene as well as apply the high fluoride varnish if necessary.
Please bring their toothbrush along so we can see if they are using the correct size brush.
Scientific studies have shown that high fluoride varnish gives added protection to teeth against decay when used in addition to brushing teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste.
What is fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish can be applied to both baby teeth and adult teeth. It involves painting a varnish that contains high levels of fluoride on to the surface of the tooth every three to six months to prevent decay. It works by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay.
We use Colgate Duraphat varnish – a pale yellow paste that sets quickly when applied to teeth using a soft brush and has a pleasant taste and a fruity smell.
Once applied it will form a protective coating on the teeth – any excess will peel off throughout the day. It is best if your child does not eat or drink for at least 30mins after having the varnish applied.
Your dentist will advise if a Healthy Smile session is appropriate as well as if the child will benefit from the application of the varnish.
